“Long Time Listener, Last Time Caller” with Pilot Irwin

Welcome to the a-rock-alypse, where sweet jams are shredding the world and we’re reaching the teardown that follows this concert we call life. But even as the big picture is breaking down, we’re still working to fix the small things. If your website’s down, your car’s kaput, or your flame-throwing guitar isn’t igniting properly, you know what to do: call Armageddon’s one-and-only fixit hotline radio station! Long Time Listener, Last Time Caller is a roleplaying game about a radio station broadcasting at the end of the world. This session, which will happen remotely and run about an hour, takes inspiration from Car Talk and Mad Max — just don’t expect any realistic advice. Pilot will play the role of the radio host. If you’d like to play a caller, please reach out and let them know so they can get you all the info you need to join. Download MP3

Ep. 16

A.I. Cryptid Hunting with Tom Woodward

Escape the Top 40 AI music chart. Abandon your labradoodle. Leave Copilot behind to build your PowerPoint on learner analytics. We’re going hunting for truly weird things. This session will mesh odd music with odder AI examples. Nothing top 40 (or top 40,000 for that matter). Nothing that helps you optimize your productivity. Hallucinations will be features (possibly hallucinations of bugs). Bootlegs, b-sides, deep cuts, covers … an intentional blend of discordant madness focused on breaking your mind out of the commodified schlock poured into your ears every single day. In addition to examples, we’ll look at sources and thought patterns to keep you wandering the edges of spaces where strange things thrive. Download MP3

Reclaiming our Socials with Kerry Pinny
Ep. 14

Reclaiming our Socials with Kerry Pinny

Special Guest: Kerry Pinny, Chief Operations Officer at the Association for Learning Technology. Prior to joining ALT, Kerry worked in the higher education sector in learning technology roles for over a decade. Given the fall from grace we’ve seen various social media platforms experience recently— from Twitter’s transition to X, to Substack’s implosion— now is the time to think critically about how to be informed, and autonomous, digital citizens. We’re seeing more and more social media users finding themselves immersed in platforms they’ve spent many hours cultivating community and content on, only to feel the rug pulled out from under them when that platform does or supports something that doesn’t align with those users’ values. At Reclaim Hosting, we’ve always been more comfortable working in spaces that are as open as possible so that we have as much control over our content and communications as possible. Our socials, however, were always stuck with the big-box providers. With the rise of the fediverse, we’re taking our autonomy back. Join us as we discuss the Reclaim Hosting team’s transition to Mastodon, a self-hostable, decentralized social networking platform, and Ghost, an open source blogging platform. We’ll discuss our perspectives on the current state of social media affairs, walk participants through our open setup, and demonstrate how to reclaim your socials! Download MP3

Coming Back Full Circle with Nada Dabbag
Ep. 09

Coming Back Full Circle with Nada Dabbag

Looking back at this past academic year, marking 25 years at George Mason University and 28 years in higher education, I engaged in two grant writing experiences that took me back full circle to my dissertation study. Really? Who would have thought with everything going on in our field that I can circle back to personalizing instruction when writing these grant proposals. Specifically to contextualizing instruction to students’ most-preferred and personally-relevant interests which was the title of my dissertation. Even more surprising was the recent connection I made between generative learning and generative AI. It was an aha moment for me. Remember Wittrock’s (1990) Generative Learning Theory and Weinstein’s Learning Strategies Model? Well, in the age of generative AI, this is making a lot of sense. So is the concept of “mindtools” which I was introduced to by my late mentor (David Jonassen). I would like to share the story of my academic journey on the DS106 Radio Summer Camp and how I came back full circle to concepts I learned almost 3 decades ago! And they still make sense! But does our field still make sense? Can we still call it Educational Technology? Or Instructional Technology? Or Instructional Design? Or Learning Design? Or Learning Engineering? Where are we going with this ever-evolving field? I would like to end on this note. Download MP3

A year of uncertainty – fighting the fight against the RAND corporation with Dave Cormier
Ep. 08

A year of uncertainty – fighting the fight against the RAND corporation with Dave Cormier

Back in the 50’s the RAND corporation sponsored some research to get a bunch of dudes to learn from the JOHNNIAC about how to solve problems. Seems RAND’s computer was super good at it. From that point, we have a whole mess of folks who are out there trying to convince us that solving problems like computers is what we should all be doing. Funny story, turns out they were also working on some systems that would do all that problem solving without us. It’s not a conspiracy story, no one’s that smart. It’s just a story about how we shouldn’t be teaching people to solve problems. We should be helping them with the grey space. The middle. The liminal. The uncertain. Austerity Blues Redux with Timothy Clarke
Ep. 07

Austerity Blues Redux with Timothy Clarke

Concerns about cuts to higher education are not new. Austerity Blues was published in 2016, and it chronicles a decade of austerity impacts to the New York and California state college systems. So we’re nearly 25 years into a steady disinvestment in higher educations. Is our present moment just more of the same? Or have we entered into something new and even more concerning? Can Higher Education achieve its aims to address affordability, increase access, and meet DEI goals while facing increasingly dire financial constraints? Hope is an act of resistance, and imagining a better, different future for HE is a radical act of defiance. The Blues, as an art form, brings a sober recognition of ‘what is’. But the Blues are also an escape, a form of catharsis, and a place to formulate a strategy for positive change. Worked all the summer And worked all the fall I had to take my Christmas In my overalls But now she’s gone An’ I don’t worry Because I’m sittin’ on top of the world –Howlin’ Wolf, Sittin’ on Top of the World This radio hour encourages listeners to call in and, in equal measure, comment on our current austerity blues AND find our way out. Western106 Roundup with Mark Wilson, Todd Conaway Alan Levine
Ep. 02

Western106 Roundup with Mark Wilson, Todd Conaway Alan Levine

The sun decamped below the vast expanse of the Western sky, revealing the heavens as a tapestry of stars that glittered like gemstones flung across black velvet. Three grizzled cowboys, their leathery faces a trail map of frontier life, huddled around the warm glow of a crackling campfire. The twang of country ballads drifted from a battered transistor radio perched on a rock, the lonesome tunes a fitting soundtrack to their maudlin musings. Each man nursed a tin mug of bitter cowboy coffee, trying to ward off the sharp chill of the desert night. They swapped tales of bygone days; epic cattle drives under pitiless skies, rowdy nights in tumbledown border towns, and narrow escapes from the clutches of corrupt lawmen. Places where cultures collided and blended to forge new identities. Their stories were peppered with wry humor and tinged with the wistfulness of men who understood their way of life was fading like a discarded daguerreotype. As the fire hissed and popped, shadows danced across their weather-beaten faces: the old cowboys savored this rare moment of camaraderie in a world that had largely left them behind. The radio played on, a lifeline to a simpler time when a man’s worth was measured by the calluses on his hands and his honesty and courage. For one fleeting night, under the canopy of stars with the soundtrack of their youth, these sagebrush sages found solace in their memories of a West that now existed only in the yellowed pages of dime novels and the doggerel of cowboy poets. Through their wry humor, poignant reflections, and vivid storytelling, the cowboys offer a glimpse into the spirit of the Wild West that informed the world of Western106, lo those many years ago. Listeners will be transported to a world of endless horizons, where the spirit of adventure still rides free, and the echoes of the Old West and Reclaim Radio never fade away. Learn more. Download MP3
